Alternative routes reach their limit

October 08, 2014

Streets in various districts were congested today as protesters were still blocking major trunk roads on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon town centre and the capacity of alternative routes reached their limit.

Assistant Commissioner for Transport Albert Su said although pressure on road traffic has eased in the last two days as commuters and drivers made their journeys earlier, this travel pattern cannot be sustained.

He called on protesters to open carriageways on major trunk roads, such as Queensway and Harcourt Road, so traffic and public life can return to normal.

Traffic congestion started at 7am today on a number of roads on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon, including those in Wan Chai and Mid-levels, such as Tai Hang Road, Broadwood Road and Yee King Road.

As kindergartens in Wan Chai and Central & Western districts resume classes tomorrow, Mr Su advised schools and parents to make prior arrangements with nanny bus operators.

A total of 249 bus routes were affected today, representing 40% of total bus routes, including 22 suspended routes and 227 diverted routes. A total of 23 green minibus routes were diverted, suspended or had services adjusted. The tram service between Western Market and Victoria Park remains suspended.
