Student talks important: CE

October 19, 2014

Chief Executive CY Leung said a forthcoming dialogue with the Federation of Students is important, adding that the discussion should be conducted on the basis of the Basic Law.

Mr Leung said during a television interview today that he wants to listen to the students face to face, and is hopeful that the dialogue will produce a constructive outcome.

He also pointed out that students and their supporters should realize that there will be plenty of room for discussion on ways to structure a nomination system to achieve a genuine choice of candidates for the Chief Executive Election in 2017.

He noted that constitutional reform of such nature and scale is unprecedented in Hong Kong - and the world at large - and that controversies are to be expected.

On the proposal of submitting a supplementary report to the NPCSC, Mr Leung said the central authorities are fully aware of the different views in the community, adding that the students’ views are not the only views in Hong Kong.

The reform report the Government has submitted included different views, he said, noting that the people occupying streets are trying to drive home the strong message that they want civic nomination, which does not comply with the Basic Law.
