Genuine choice in CE election

April 25, 2015

Chief Secretary Carrie Lam said today that under the universal suffrage proposals the Government has presented to the Legislative Council, voters will have a genuine choice in picking the next Chief Executive.

Speaking to reporters after attending a television programme this morning, Mrs Lam said that through the various designs in the details of the electoral arrangements, the Chief Executive election in 2017 will be competitive and transparent.

The reform package is constitutional and complies with the Basic Law and the National People's Congress Standing Committee’s decision, she added.

Mrs Lam stressed that the most important thing now is to introduce universal suffrage into Hong Kong’s political system, then the city's constitutional development can move forward.

She added that in the next two to three months, the Government will continue to garner community support for the reform package, by lobbying lawmakers and explaining the proposals to the public.
