Chief Secretary Carrie Lam said today the Government will continue to explain that the 2017 universal suffrage proposal is not the ‘endgame’ and can be further enhanced in future.
Mrs Lam told reporters the crux of the reform proposal is that instead of the 1,200-member election committee, every eligible voter can take part in electing the Chief Executive in 2017.
She stressed that it is a great step forward, adding that most Hong Kong people would be happy to see universal suffrage come to fruition.
Mrs Lam also said she never underestimated the difficulty in implementing the reforms, and would continue until the very end to try and win the support of the community and legislators.
