More need to know Basic Law

December 14, 2014

Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen believes more communication on the Basic Law is needed to forge community consensus.

He told reporters today many people hold diverse views on the mini-constitution, some of them even run contrary to the original intent of the law.

He advised against the Federation of Students' non-cooperation plan, saying breaching the law will only cause further disorder in society.

He said Hong Kong can attain democracy, including universal suffrage, by lawful and legal means.

He rejected claims there is a conflict of interest in him handling both constitutional reform and the prosecution of occupy protesters, as authorities are only interested in the law breach and not the political move behind it.
