Partial lunar eclipse on Nov 19

November 3, 2021

A partial lunar eclipse will occur on November 19, the Hong Kong Observatory said today.

As the elevation of the Moon will be rather low during the eclipse, the event can be best observed at places with an unobstructed view to the east and the northeast, it explained.

On November 19, moonrise will take place at 5.38pm. The Moon will leave the umbra at 6.47pm and the whole eclipse will end at 8.06pm.

A partial lunar eclipse occurs when part of the Moon enters the Earth’s umbra. During the occurrence on November 19, since the Moon will be below the horizon at the maximum eclipse, the eclipse observable in Hong Kong will be already in progress upon moonrise.

The public can view the partial lunar eclipse via a joint webcast. They may also visit the Hong Kong Observatory’s website for relevant weather conditions and astronomical observation conditions.

The next lunar eclipse observable in Hong Kong will be a total lunar eclipse on November 8 in 2022.
