Flying beauties

Thematic event the Flying Beauties is taking place at Hong Kong Wetland Park from April 23 to October 28.

Magnificent creature: A butterfly may be tiny, but its amazing colours and metamorphosis are captivating.

Home sweet home: The Wetland Park's Butterfly Garden is an ideal habitat for butterflies, and a great spot for watching them.

In abundance: The Wetland Park hosts more than 150 species of butterflies, accounting for over 60% of the total number of butterfly species recorded in Hong Kong.

A bug's life: The complex lifecycle of a butterfly begins as an egg that hatches into a caterpillar...

... then the caterpillar develops into a pupa, from which an adult butterfly emerges.

Slow glider: The Common Sailer (Neptis hylas) is often seen gliding slowly in woods, but flies away quickly when startled.

Close encounters: It is easier to appreciate the wonder of butterflies when observing them closely.

Distinctive pattern: A butterfly can carry as many as 600 pigment-bearing scales on just one square millimetre of its wing.

Staking a claim: The Great Egg-fly (Hypolimnas bolina) is a highly territorial species found in wooded areas near shrubs.

Flower lover: The Red-base Jezebel (Delias pasithoe) flies slowly. This species is often found near flowering plants during autumn and winter.

Ecological education: The Flying Beauties event shows visitors the anatomy, lifecycle, survival strategies and courtship behaviour of butterflies.

New interest: The colourful butterflies attract the attention of these youngsters.

Photographic fun: The event features a host of photo opportunities for visitors, both indoors...

... and outdoors.
