Lead in water risk to be studied

July 25, 2015

Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung said the Housing Department is exploring ways to eliminate the risk of lead-tainted water in future housing projects.

Speaking to reporters after attending a radio programme this morning, he said the primary suspect responsible for the presence of lead in drinking water is the material used in soldering water pipes. The department will look into the possibility of using water pipes that do not involve soldering.

He said the department will study what kind of water pipes could be used.

On the progress of appointing the Commission of Inquiry, Prof Cheung said procedures to follow include consulting the Chief Justice as the Chief Executive is inclined to invite a judge to chair the commission.

He hoped it would not take long and past experience suggests it usually takes about three weeks to form a commission.
