Children, pregnant women and lactating mothers in Kai Ching Estate have been advised to avoid drinking tap water, after excessive lead was found in four water samples collected in the estate.
Briefing reporters today, Permanent Secretary for Transport & Housing (Housing) Stanley Ying said among the 30 water samples collected yesterday, four were found to have a lead content exceeding the World Health Organisation standard.
The samples were collected from flats and are believed to have been caused by soldering materials containing lead.
The Government has asked the contractor to quickly change the problematic parts.
People should flush the faucet before using the water for drinking and cooking, and children, pregnant women and lactating mothers should use an alternative source of water.
Families can register to collect bottled water at the estate office.
The Department of Health has provided a hotline (2125 1122) to answer queries.
