2 new MTR lines approved

November 30, 2010

The Chief Executive in Council today authorised new Mass Transit Railway links the South Island Line (East) and the Kwun Tong Line Extension. Construction will start in the middle of next year for completion in 2015.

The 7km South Island Line (East) will connect Admiralty with South Horizons via stations at Ocean Park, Wong Chuk Hang and Lei Tung Estate. It will run in tunnels and on viaducts to get commuters from Southern District to Admiralty in 10 minutes.

The estimated construction cost ranges from $12.3 billion to $12.6 billion. The final cost will be available in the first quarter next year after designs are finalised.

The Kwun Tong Line Extension connects the MTR Kwun Tong Line from Yau Ma Tei Station to Whampoa, via an interchange at the proposed Ho Man Tin Station for the future Sha Tin to Central Link. It will cut the journey time from Whampoa to Mong Kok to five minutes.

The estimated construction cost is $5.3 billion to $5.6 billion, with the figure to be finalised in the next quarter.
