Heavy metal:  Chief Secretary Carrie Lam examines lead-testing equipment at the Government Laboratory.

Chief Secretary Carrie Lam visited the Water Supplies Department and the Government Laboratory today to learn more about their work on water quality monitoring and testing, particularly in regard to incidents of lead in the drinking water in some public housing estates.

Mrs Lam first visited the Water Supplies Department’s laboratory in Sha Tin, where water is tested to ensure Hong Kong's treated fresh water complies with the World Health Organisation's Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality.

She also inspected the operation of an advanced instrument for testing the lead content in drinking water.

She then visited the Government Laboratory to view the equipment used to test drinking water and lead content in soldering materials.

She also saw how the X-ray fluorescence spectrometry technique is used to detect lead on the surfaces of objects.

She commended the staff of both departments for their professionalism in handling their recent workload surge due to the lead being found in some estates.

She encouraged them to continue ensuring the safety of Hong Kong's drinking water.
