Chief Executive CY Leung said today the Central Government is committed to implementing universal suffrage for the Chief Executive election and to developing the city's democracy.
Mr Leung told reporters before an Executive Council meeting today that the Government's reform package has the potential to gain a two-thirds majority in the Legislative Council and urged lawmakers to vote in support of the proposal.
He emphasised that only proposals which comply with the Basic Law and National People's Congress Standing Committee's decisions could be implemented.
Mr Leung reiterated that if the reform package is vetoed in LegCo, the Government would "refocus its energy on other matters", as it could not "carry on indefinitely" with the exercise.
He added that if the reform package is voted down, pan-democratic lawmakers should not be under the assumption that the Central authorities would accept any proposal that was not consistent with the Basic Law and NPC Standing Committee's decisions in future.
