LegCo should note public opinion

May 28, 2015

Chief Executive CY Leung has urged lawmakers to vote on the political reform proposal according to public opinion, adding that rejecting the plan will stall the reform process.

Speaking at a question-and-answer session with lawmakers today, Mr Leung said many polls by different institutions have shown more people support the proposal for electing the Chief Executive by universal suffrage, than oppose it.

He said although some citizens feel the plan is not the ideal package, it is still better than the current arrangement. So if the proposal is passed by the Legislative Council, he said the Government will start the legislation process accordingly.

However, the Government will not allow endless disputes on the political reform, and will instead focus on economic development if the reform plan is voted down, he added.

In view of many people's desire for one person, one vote, the Government has been conducting surveys asking who should be held responsible if the proposal is voted down. Mr Leung said the pan-democrats should conduct their own poll asking the same question, and study the results.
