Gov't to explain reform package

May 12, 2015

Chief Executive CY Leung said today the Government will employ different methods to explain its universal suffrage proposal to the community because it is a matter of great importance.

Speaking to reporters ahead of this morning's Executive Council meeting, Mr Leung said Government officials visiting various districts to reach out to the people and listen to their views was just one method.

He said it is easy to vote down the proposal, but society must consider the consequences and whether there will be a second chance to achieve "one-person, one-vote".

Mr Leung added that only after universal suffrage for electing the Chief Executive is achieved, can a similar arrangement be pursued for the Legislative Council election.

Regarding various opinion polls on the Government proposal that have been carried out recently, the Chief Executive noted that different polls conducted by different organisations yield different results, but they all provide a useful reference.
