No compromise on NPCSC decision

April 15, 2015

There is no room for the National People's Congress Standing Committee's August decision to be retracted, revised or reversed. The decision will be upheld and will lay down the framework for the Government's reform proposal to be released shortly, Chief Secretary Carrie Lam has said.

Mrs Lam told reporters today that she will be holding short meetings with lawmakers over the next few days about the reform package, but advised them not to expect compromises or changes to the NPCSC's decision made on August 31 last year.

The Chief Secretary added that she would urge legislators to take public opinion into full account, noting that Hong Kong people are in favour of the passage of any Government proposal that is based on the NPCSC decision, to meet the people's hopes for universal suffrage in the selection of the Chief Executive in 2017.

Mrs Lam called on the pan-democrats not to rush into committing to veto the reform package as soon as it is unveiled, adding that the Government would continue to work hard to secure their support for it.
