CS rejects reform request

January 13, 2015

Chief Secretary Carrie Lam has ruled out the request to restart the constitutional reform process.

Speaking to the media after attending a reform forum today, Mrs Lam noted that some people believe the Government can restart the reform process if the Legislative Council vetoes the reform proposal, which she said is impracticable and impossible.

She said according to the National People's Congress Standing Committee's decision on August 31, if the reform proposal has been rejected by lawmakers the election of the Chief Executive in 2017 will follow the 2012 selection method.

Such a move will pose a very serious impact on the democratic development of Hong Kong, she added, calling on pan-democratic lawmakers to think of the consequences.

She also noted the Government will continue to communicate with all parties, including the pan-democrats.
