Former CE Tung in plea to end occupation

October 24, 2014

Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference National Committee Vice Chairman Tung Chee Hwa urges protesters to end the Occupy Central movement, adding that open dialogue is the only way to achieve consensus on constitutional reform.

Speaking to the media today, Mr Tung said he is glad that students spoke with Government officials on political reform. He noted that open dialogue is far more effective than illegal occupation to strive for democracy, and occupation should not be a bargaining chip during discussions.

He hopes students will continue the reform talks with the Government and express their opinions in a legal and rational manner.

He believes most citizens want to see the occupation come to an end.

The Government is being sincere and constructive in agreeing to submit a supplementary public opinion report to Mainland officials and be willing to further improve elections beyond 2017 in light of social conditions in future, he added.
