Chief Executive CY Leung says there is room for discussion in the coming round of constitutional reform consultation on the composition of the nomination committee for the Chief Executive election in 2017.
He told reporters today the Central Government has clearly indicated it will not retract the National People’s Congress Standing Committee’s decision made on August 31.
He said discussion on the matter should focus on what can be done within the decision’s framework so 5 million eligible voters can have the first opportunity in Hong Kong’s history to select the Chief Executive in 2017.
He added the Government cannot make something that is not provided for in the Basic Law, such as civic nomination, possible.
