NPCSC decision cannot be changed: CE

September 30, 2014

Occupy Central organisers and participants are urged to consider Hong Kong's future as an illegal gathering won't force Beijing to back down on political reform, Chief Executive CY Leung says.

Speaking to the media before today's Executive Council meeting, Mr Leung stressed that, according to the Basic Law, the Legislative Council, the Chief Executive and the National People's Congress Standing Committee have the right to decide how the Chief Executive should be elected.

Mr Leung added that he understands the NPC Standing Committee's decision may not offer the kind of electoral method some people were hoping for. He called on people to deeply consider Hong Kong's future, as citizens will lose the opportunity for universal suffrage and the result will be a stalemate if the Government does not adhere to the Basic Law.
