September 28, 2014

Chief Executive CY Leung said that he appreciates students' concerns about civic affairs, but stressed their views must be aired peacefully, rationally and in accordance with the law.

Speaking about the recent student gathering during a press conference today, Mr Leung said the Basic Law has outlined how constitutional development should proceed, and urged students to understand that the implementation of universal suffrage must be in accordance with the Basic Law and the decisions of the National People's Congress Standing Committee.

He also said that constitutional development should be promoted in accordance with the Basic Law to maintain Hong Kong’s prosperity.

Mr Leung also made it clear that the Chief Executive and the Government cannot bypass the decision of the NPCSC.

Regarding the Police’s handling of the situation, he said the Government has full confidence in its professionalism.
