Keep striving for consensus: CE

September 01, 2014

Chief Executive CY Leung has called on society to continue efforts to reach consensus on political reform, saying the Chief Executive election method can be further relaxed after 2017.

Speaking to reporters today, Mr Leung said the community is concerned about whether the election method can be further modified after the implementation of universal suffrage.

He quoted the words of National People's Congress Standing Committee Deputy Secretary-General Li Fei, saying that laws can be amended and the city can review the election method at local legislation level, according to the framework the committee set out.

Its recent decision on the election method is not designed to prevent certain people or factions from participating in the election, he said, urging the public and lawmakers to read the decision and to treasure the opportunity to achieve universal suffrage in 2017.
